Important Changes to EU Travel Rules from October

Important Changes to EU Travel Rules from October 2025

From 12 October 2025, the EU will introduce the Entry/Exit System (EES). This new digital system will affect how UK travellers enter and leave the Schengen Area. If you are planning a European holiday this autumn or beyond, here is what you need to know.

What is the Entry/Exit System?

The EES will replace the traditional system of passport stamping with a digital record of when you enter and exit the Schengen Zone.

It applies to most popular holiday destinations, including France, Spain, Italy, Portugal and Greece. It does not apply to Ireland or Cyprus.

Key Changes for Travellers

  • Biometric registration: On your first trip after 12 October, you will need to provide fingerprints and a facial image at a border kiosk or booth. This record is valid for three years, so you will not need to repeat it every time.

  • Proof of travel arrangements: Border officials may ask to see a return or onward ticket, travel insurance covering medical needs, and proof of accommodation such as a hotel booking.

  • Stay limits remain unchanged: UK travellers can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period in the Schengen Area without a visa.

  • No more passport stamps: Entry and exit details will now be logged electronically.

Where You Will Notice the Change?

  • Airports and ferry ports: Expect to use new kiosks and allow extra time for possible queues.

  • Eurostar, Dover and Eurotunnel: Checks will take place in the UK before boarding, so it is wise to arrive earlier than usual.

  • Cruises: If your cruise begins and ends in the UK, you are usually not required to go through EES.

Preparing for Your Trip

To make your journey as smooth as possible:

  • Check that your passport is valid for at least three months after your return date.

  • Keep printed copies of your accommodation and return travel details.

  • Arrange comprehensive travel insurance before you travel.

  • Allow additional time at ports, stations and airports, especially in the early weeks of the new system.

Looking Ahead: ETIAS in 2026

The EES is the first stage of new EU border measures. In 2026, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) will also come into effect. This will require UK visitors to apply online before travelling, pay a small fee (around €20), and receive authorisation before entering the Schengen Area.
